JOHN MURPHY

Founding Venture Partner, focus on investments in Medical Device, Life Sciences and Technology (Robotics) sectors, operating practices and advising portfolio companies.

Education:
BSc (Hons) Computing Science (Software Engineering) – University of Greenwich (London),  MS Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (Software Engineering & AI) – University of Illinois at Chicago, MBA (International Finance) – Arizona State University/Thunderbird.

Professional Experience:
25+ year global operating executive in roles ranging from Software Engineer to VP/GM, COO, CEO and Entrepreneur in Aerospace, Optoelectronics, Life Science Tools & Diagnostics, Medical Imaging, Medical Devices and Surgical Robotics.  Has run companies in public, private equity and venture capital environments, with major operations in Canada, China, Finland, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, UK and US.

Currently CEO of Virtual Incision Corp (a Series B stage surgical robotics start-up company), pioneering the use of in vivo mini-robots for General Surgery abdominal procedures.

Prior roles include Independent Director of NeuWave Medical, the pioneer in intelligent microwave ablation in kidney, liver, lung and bone – recently acquired by Johnson & Johnson; CEO of two private equity-backed middle market technology companies, COO of PerkinElmer [NYSE: PKI] ~$2B revenue, 45 sites, 10,000 employees, 125 countries; Director and VP/GM roles at AlliedSignal (Honeywell). 

Personal:
A native of London, John moved to the U.S. in 1989 and  has been a Pleasanton resident since 2001, John and Liz, his wife of 23 years, enjoy the Tri-Valley community and biking, golf, skiing, and baseball with their four children, Jack (MIT), Patrick (UChicago), Christopher and Katie (Amador Valley HS).  John also plays in the band BATCH22.
